Following those instructions we have created a link for all SROC events and activities, all international and level A events, all level B from NWOA and YHOA, all level C from NWOA and level D's from our neighbouring clubs, in the next 30 days. This will update automatically as the BOF fixtures database changes over time. Please only click on this link if you are interested in evaluating this facility. Please let the Club Captain know so he can have refunds available.

The team has been selected to try and achieve the highest possible score. Over fifty club members and a few guests enjoyed the challenge set by Julian Lailey on his new Sizergh map, near Kendal, today. Slow going on the wet ground prevented anyone collecting all 30 controls within the allotted hour so the promised bonus point system was not needed. Most adjourned to the rather splendid Athenaeum Hall in Heversham for a social gathering and presentation of the annual trophies. Winner of the Handicap race for the second time (she won in 2006) was Rebecca Roberts, returning to her old form? Results for the race are here and RouteGadget is available here. Start as you mean to go on with a blast around Low Park Wood at the 11th New Year Cracker on New Year's Day, then follow that with a run on a brand new area for the Club Handicap at Sizergh on the 7th. Swiftly followed by the second half of the Night Street League - first event on the 11th January at Chorley. The Spring Series starts in early February through to April, then it's the Summer Sprints Series. Not forgetting our Level B event at Whitbarrow on March 4th, and the British Champs are in the North West in early May. Look out for helper requests for the Relay day which is on Helsington Barrows.

Season's Greetings

2012 Club Handicap Saturday 7th January

Hot on the heels of the New Year Cracker and only a stone's throw away at the new area of Sizergh, recently mapped by Julian Lailey, comes the Club Handicap. Many orienteers seem to think so as this event has gained popularity almost every year since its inception. The NYC returns to Low Park Wood in 2012 after three years away, with a 50 minute mass start odds and evens score to blow away those New Year cobwebs! Beginners can enjoy a conventional score course instead. Either way you are sure to enjoy the challenge of this mixed wood. The illustrated industrial remains may or may not be a control site; most of the area is lovely runnable woodland. Both events make use of the newly updated map, which includes an enlargement of the ancient maze. Rumour has it that there may even be a control or two tucked away in the maze! Courses and control locations differ between the day and night events so it will be OK to run in both. Perhaps a good time to try your first night event? Santa hats are not obligatory but will be encouraged.

Ashton Street League, Wednesday 14th December

Another good venue and good weather for an enjoyable run around an old favourite area. This is usually meant in the metaphorical sense but when putting controls out on Saturday it was quite literal. Conditions in the pick and mix area in the afternoon were quite phenomenal. Several spectaculars spring to mind - Losing my footing above an inclined slab and sliding down it on my front but upright. Taking my foot off a kite for a couple of seconds only to see soar up more than 50 ft and disappear over the horizon. Best was on the hill 107 and being hurled about 15 ft Eastward down the gently sloping rain soaked grass on my front, doing a fair impression of a Jurgen Klinsmann goal celebration. However, with a bit of help from the organiser I got all of the control markers in place before dark.

After much deliberation the courses evolved. I kept the early pick and mix selection of controls as at the 2009 event and then added cross country legs to produce something like a W21E course, i.e. the B course. From there I added a loop and a few variations to make the A. It seemed only right that all competitors experience a similar type of event so I progressively reduced and varied the basic course till I got to the F course. This just managed to incorporate the pick and mix before returning to the Finish. It all seemed to work. Routegadget shows that the long leg on A, B and C offered interesting choices. For the pick and mix I went for a distorted matrix. This was successful because there was no consensus as the best way to go round. I had hoped to lure some competitors to the SW control (108) as their first one but it looks like everyone went to 105. They might have gone to 108 if it had been 150m to the South.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success, and to the competitors for turning out on a dreadful weekend. Particular mention to Dave for his relaxed and confident organising and David and Miriam for keeping me on the straight and narrow. They put right a couple mistakes I made in the stressful conditions on the Saturday afternoon. They were controls that we knew needed a close look at again but the weather conditions were not conducive to the careful consideration required.

Better than all that Sprint-O and Park-O? And less dangerous too. I hear that someone broke leg at the Penrith event, though we did have someone with a cut hand that needed stitches.

Here’s to the next Tim Watkins Trophy in 2013!

Brian Jackson

TWT Controllers' Report

When we agreed to control the Tim Watkins Trophy, we did not know that Miriam would be back at work and that did limit the time that we could spend in the terrain. We did have a couple of days visiting the control sites in very pleasant weather, but it would have been better if we could have managed a few more visits.

Brian Jackson had planned some interesting courses which made good use of the terrain and we made only minor suggestions for improvement. The map is fairly old; the paths have changed, the juniper has grown and in some places quite major cliffs are missing. But the contours are good which we feel is the most important thing, and decided it was better to live with any imperfections.

The weather was dreadful on Saturday and Brian did a tremendous job in putting out the controls in such conditions. We visited some controls on Saturday afternoon and the rest on Sunday morning. We adjusted the positions of a few; not surprising given the conditions in which they were put out.

We would like to commend the organiser and planner on their determination to stage the event if at all possible despite a weather forecast predicting gales for the weekend. It didn't seem to dampen people's enthusiasm too much. Congratulations to all prize winners, and apologies to the Binlay Babes who didn't receive their prize due to a mix up with their team name. They and the Horney Devils were far and away the best costumes. I would love to know how the Horney Devils also managed to accrue so many points, to also be joint second in the main competition I suspect some skilllfull vamping may have been involved.
The many twists to the rules pretty much eliminate any correlation between points scored and Orienteering skill. As I haven't organised a lot of events I was grateful to have the support of several experienced club members. Particularly the Harding family, also Mark (Count Dracula) Edwards, Julian (The Finger) Lailey and the Roomes. Last but not least my big sister Ali and son Michael for putting out the road signs.

I look forward to seeing you all next year, but if you can't wait that long, why not some more conventional Orienteering, in the day time without costumes.

Prize Winners

Best Costume Parts of the Carnforth and Bolton le Sands maps have been joined with newly surveyed areas so old hands are guaranteed some new bits to run on. Event one uses the Royal Hotel, serving food up to 9pm but please order before your run. The usual league format will be followed for this and the other nine events in the league. This season there will be an extra 11th event, separate from the league, after which the prizegiving will be held. Proving that they can run by day as well as by night, Street League regulars John Britton (MDOC) and Glenys Ferguson (SROC) are pictured collecting their prizes for winning the Men's and Women's Ultravet classes at last Saturday's London City Race. Lack of familiarity with the ISSOM standard caught out a few runners who later self-disqualified. All should look closely at the legend on the map and note that features shown as impassable must not be crossed. This includes taking short cuts through buildings! Even if you can see an obvious gap in e.g. a hedge, if it is shown as continuous on the map you cannot cut through. This is often to ensure that permissions continue to be granted, or for safety reasons, but in any case it ensures fairness. The mapper and planner jointly apologise to anyone affected by the unmarked new construction zones/fences. The map was most recently updated a week ago, but those pesky builders will keep doing more work. Martyn Roome lead the ride via the Lune cycle path and minor roads to Carnforth, where everyone joined the Lancaster Canal towpath through to Hest Bank for a cafe stop. The ride continued along Morecambe promenade with a lunch stop on Sandylands promenade, via Heysham and Middleton to Overton. A short diversion to the picturesque hamlet of Sunderland also allowed a visit to Sambo's grave. The ride was completed by a return to Halton via minor roads and cycle paths. Results can be viewed here and you are invited to add your route to RouteGadget. There is but one event remaining in the series, but with the best 4 out of 5 scores to count for overall places there are at least three people in with a chance of clinching the title for gross scores.
