 I now have confirmation we will be competing on Sunday 23 February in the SELOC round at Clowbridge (south of Burnley), against WCOC, LOC, MDOC and DEE. We need to beat two of these to qualify for the Final. Please let Captain John know by email as soon as you can whether you are or are not able to run. We will need a big strong turnout. Two courses available: Long - 60 controls in 60 minutes, Short - 30 controls in 30 minutes.

The event is in the final 2024 NWUL (NorthWest Urban League). It takes place on Sunday 1st December. All courses use the pedestrianised town centre and surrounding residential streets as well as passing iconic buildings such as The Midland Hotel and Winter Gardens.  Entries are open , just follow the link Sientries  we are looking forward to welcoming you to sunny Morecambe. With well over 100 competitors this could be the most popular SROC local event yet! A good mix of seasoned orienteers and newcomers/returners enjoyed the perfect conditions at Beacon Fell today. SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) OMM Elite Win for SROC Member!

 Philip Rutter, running with Finlay Wild, won the Elite OMM last weekend in Glen Artney!

It was a closely-fought battle. They were in second place on the first day, only 1 minute behind the leaders. On the second day they overtook and ended up 1st overall by less than 2 minutes in 11 and a half hours of racing.

This is an amazing result in the UK oldest Mountain Marathon.

Congratulations to other SROCers too for great results, including Matt Cochrane, Karen Nash and partner Rowena Browne and Calvin Routledge. Apologies to others who I will have missed.

We are piloting a number of maprun versions of the Night Street League (NSL) events. These will be made available the day after the event. They will be 60 min score events consisting of a subset of the controls. They can be run at anytime but you should wear appropriate kit for the time of day & weather conditions. Juniors (u16) must only run if accompanied by an adult at all times. A run on these courses will not count as a NSL score. The map file can be downloaded from www.goorienteering.org.uk, search for the event location (eg Heysham). Scan the QR code on the map to load the course into maprun. The courses will be available until 30 sept the following year. Please note that the courses have not been test run, GPS quality may vary and changes are liable to appear in urban terrain.

 Over 30 SROC members attended the Welsh 6 Days in the Brecon Beacons last week - and what a fantastic week it was!

Event five of the SROC Summer Series was held in sunshine in Carnforth today. The area was new to orienteering and Graham Capper not only drew the map but planned the courses too. All in all a great finish to the series! Results are here, and check out the final series scores here. Congatulations to Fraser Dixon, overall winner, and Cate Matthew first female. Also to all the other class winners, of whom John Embrey was not only Ultravet Men winner but also 2nd overall!

The sun shone and the newcomers came to enjoy some real orienteering in the lovely Happy Mount Park in Morecambe today. The encampment of Normas had little effect on proceedings, but the one control site which clashed with an archery range did come a cropper as a result. Results are on-line here. Despite an amber weather warning for strong winds the latest SROC event went ahead mainly in susshine with a stiff breeze. Paricipants varied from first-timers to old hands, and all seemed to enjoy the challenges of navigating around the park. SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC in the CompassSport final!

SROC hosted an extremely successful qualifying round for the national clubs championships, the CompassSport Cup for large clubs and Trophy for smaller clubs. Interesting courses were made even better by early Spring weather, most folk completing their runs in sunshine.In a close fought match LOC took first place with in the Cup with 2458 points, followed by WCOC on 2413 and DEE on 2316. In the Trophy competition SROC on 1288 points were just ahead of BL who scored 1278, and PFO on 1241.

There were some fine individual performances on the SROC team with maximum points going to David Roome, John Embrey (club captain), Ben, Ellie, Maisie and James Todhunter and Martyn Roome. See all the results, both team and individual here. RouteGadget is here.

Congratulations to the SROC night orienteers who took part in the NWNL over the Winter. Results tables for the league may be viewed here. Notable performances: M19-49 runner up Simonas Sakalauskas, M50+ 3rd place John Embrey, W50+ winner Karen Nash and overall league winner Heather Roome, who finished with 117 points out of a theoretical maximum of 120, thereby beating all-comers.

The harsh weather only put off a couple of runners and a very strong turnout enjoyed the sometimes slippery and windy conditions at Brinscall today. John Embrey, paying pennance for his win at the handicap last year, produced both a new map and a new type of score event for the delight of the gathered throng. It may have escaped some members' notice that SROC, foemed in 1964 and therefore England's first orienteering club, is this year celebrating its diamond jubilee. There will be various special events throughout the year, culminating in a "60 at 60" special New Year score event on 1st January 2025. Various commemorative clothing is now available to order, with O tops, jackets, hoodies and dry robes all bearing the special 60th logo (as above). Any club member who has not seen the email explaining how to order should contact development@sroc.org to reqest this information. Please don't delay; we want to place a major order with the suppliers quite soon.
