SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Orienteering is Back - Try the MapRun Challenge

The first of our MapRun Challenge courses is live! It's a score event on Beacon Fell (between Garstang and Chipping). So you visit the controls in any order you wish, without a time limit, with each control being one of the permanent posts. You can do this course whenever you want. Then you can compare your score and time against the leaderboard. And see the route you took!

Getting Started
For details of how to download the MapRunF app (not the old MapRun app) look at the British Orienteering VOC page here . The pictorial guide is particularly helpful.
When you get to Select Event, you need to navigate to UK, then Lancashire, then the Lancaster, Wyre, Fylde, Ribble Valley folder and then select
Beacon Fell VOC Mk3 July 20

The guide on the Airienteers site here is also very helpful.

Email Development@sroc.org for the pdf of the map so you can print it. Same email if you have any questions about the app you can't solve from the web. From 1st August we will be able to load our VOC courses on to the BOF portal and you can download them from there.

Make sure your GPS is on and that you are not in power saving mode.
One final tip - if your phone does not beep at a control but you know you are there, just carry on - you can review your result using the HITMO function when you finish.

Safety
British Orienteering have confirmed that their insurance policy does not cover individuals who are out for a run on their own like this rather than participating at a registered organised event. Therefore anyone undertaking Maprun is doing so in their own time, run at their own risk and SROC and British Orienteering take no responsibility for any damage or injury whilst participating.
However, from the 1st August we will be able to register such courses as Activities and the BOF insurance will apply.

Covid19
Please remember to stay safe when undertaking any type of orienteering - and to stay within the governments guidelines on social distancing - these courses are provided as an opportunity for us to individually (or in families) enjoy a small bit of our sport again.
We hope that you enjoy the ability to use these maps, but please be mindful of your own health and others', we ask that you will:

heed the current government restrictions for example if you have a pre-existing medical condition
keep yourself safe, but also be aware and keep any members of the general public safe, so hand washing/cleaning is important and do consider this as technical training not a race - always give people you encounter 2m of space - if you need to divert or stop and wait, please do so
support the government's efforts to manage the infection.
