Night Street League at the half-way stage

With 5 out of 10 events in the mail league completed we can start to see who might be on the podium in March. However, with your best five scores to count, there is still time to mount a campaign on those top spots! League tables may be viewed here. Meanwhile, the next event is at Morecambe next Wednesday, 5th January. Please read the details here and get your food requests in asap! Otherwise your choice of dish may be limited.

Morecambe street league event Wednesday 5th January

Details for this event have now been published. Please read them if you are coming to the event, particularly with regard to eating at the designated pub and pre-ordering meals. All arrangements are subject to change if new rules come into force by then.

Street League Coordination

After 12 years I wish to make this my last series for coordinating the Winter Street League. Whilst I have very much enjoyed the role I am now in a situation where age and injury are catching up with me. My hip injury has prevented me taking part in any of the events so far in this series, whilst the injury is not, so far, preventing me continuing with my other interests, running, especially on roads, has not proved possible. For me taking an active part was a fundamental part of the coordinating role.

Street League event 5, Standish

New Year Cracker 2022

Efforts to secure sufficient parking for this event at the original venue of Arnside Knott have proved fruitless. We will instead enjoy the challenges of Lancaster University campus to start the new year as we mean to go on! Entries are open now on SiEntries.

Spring Series event 1, Healey Nab 6 Feb 2022

We will return to the little used but incredibly varied area of Healey Nab near Chorley for the first Spring Series event. This is to be a Level C (Regional) event with courses from White to Short Blue planned on the newly drawn map by John Embrey. Eaves Wood Autumn Series Event

Over 60 orienteers joined SROC for the third autumn series event in Eaves Wood. Despite initially drizzly conditions, the day brightened during the event and ended up being a relatively mild December day. The limestone paths and outcrops around Eaves Wood generally give this area some orienteering 'character' and, in addition, the recent winter storms had created some additional features and taping for orienteers (and planners!) to work around. However, despite the additional challenges most competitors happily reported clear rounds. Thanks to all who participated today. Michael Hendry

SROC Winter Street League

As many will know the recent event in St. Annes was for our prestigious Tower Trophy. This is the first of our trophies to be awarded in the current series. It is based on the Age and Gender adjusted score on the night and can only be won once. This season the trophy has been won by Andy Quickfall so many congratulations to him. Bob

Williamson Park event 13th November

We apologise for the problems today, mainly relating to the failure of one SI unit during the event. Number 165 was successfully "dibbed" by at least three competitors but then failed to work for anyone else! Such failures are thankfully rare. We have credited an extra 10 points to anyone who said they had problems there, or who probably did judging by the rest of their performance. WILLIAMSON PARK SCORE EVENT SATURDAY 13TH NOVEMBER

Everyone is welcome - full details are on the fixtures tab - the closing date is 7.00pm Wednesday 10th November.

Please note that toilets in the Wyresdale Road car park are closed for the winter, so the nearest ones are up by the Memorial/cafe - so you may need to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes there and back.

Entries are strong for next Sunday's event with good competition likely on all courses. The entry deadline has been extended until Wednesday, or until all maps have been allocated, whichever comes first. There will be no entries on the day. Get in while you can!

Night Street League underway

The first street league event of the new season was held in Penwortham yesterday. Results will be available soon, but meanwhile RouteGadget is ready for routes to be added.

Full results including team breakdown are now available here. Team Captain Miriam Rosen lead from the front by scoring maximum points on her course. There were many other notable performances from club members, a real demonstration of true teamwork.

Breaking News... SROC win the CompassSport Trophy!

 

SROC have triumphed in the national competition for small clubs, in the delayed final held over from last year! We await full results from the event at Tankersley today.

SROC Street League 2021-22

Hi it's that time of year again when thoughts turn to checking torches, turning out that reflective gear and sharpening pencils. The time for the new Street League season is nearly upon us. You will be pleased to know that we have a full complement of events for the series and many thanks to those who have volunteered to run an event. Also the prices will stay the same at £3 and £1.

We cannot assume that the current Covid rules will apply throughout the series so it may be that the organisation for an event will vary with possibly last minute changes, so please keep a check on the SROC site for any last minute alterations.

The first event is scheduled for Wednesday 20th October in Penwortham and final details for this will be published quite soon. I hope to see many of you at Penwortham and throughout the series.

Traitors Gill Event Postponed

We are sorry to announce that we will not be able to go ahead with this event on Sunday 10th October. Just too many livestock on the area enjoying the good grass to make it comfortable! Watch this website for future SROC events though.

Compass Sport Trophy Final Sunday 17th October 2021. Tankersley/Hesley Woods. Replies needed by Sunday 26 September.

Your Club Needs You!

SROC has qualified for the CompassSport Trophy Final, to be held at Tankersley/Hesley Woods, near Sheffield, on Sunday 17 October. These are interesting woods with a lot of detail. You are strongly urged to look at past maps for the area on the SYO RouteGadget page.

The provisional start time range is 10.27 to 13.30.

The top 13 results across a range of courses will score but we need as many people as possible to compete in order to give us a good spread across the courses. Everyone is most welcome to take part, and all finishers make a valuable contribution to the club’s score, either by being in the scoring 13 or by finishing ahead of other clubs’ runners.

Astley Park and Village urban event, Chorley

Today's urban league event was held in glorious September sunshine, and Andy Quickfall's courses met with acclaim from the urban orienteering enthusiasts. Results and RouteGadget are now available.

SROC AGM 2021

Members are reminded that this year's Annual General Meeting wil take place by video confertence on Wednesday 15th September, starting at 7.30 pm. Upcoming events

We are fast approaching the entry deadline for Sunday's Astley Park and Village urban event. Entries close on Wednesday evening and there is no entry on the day so don't miss out! Williamson Park Autumn Series event, 18th September

On-line entries are now open for the first 2021 Autumn Series event. This will be in Williamson Park, Lancaster, on Saturday 18th September. More details and to enter go to the SiEntries website.

Entries are open for the Astley Park and Astley Village urban event, 5th September

The Astley North West Urban League event, which was postponed in July, will now take place on Sunday 5th September. Entries are now open via SiEntries . Anyone wishing to help at the event will be entitled to a half price run. Please contact the Organiser, Les Davies if you are able to help.

Astley Park and Village Event Moved to September

Due to permissions taking longer than anticipated we have moved this event to Sunday 5th September. Further details will be provided in due course, but it will certainly be an event worth waiting for!

JWOC selection success

Congratulations to Finlay Johnson who has been selected as a member of the GB team set to attend the 2021 Junior World Orienteering Championships in Turkey. 

Traitors Gill Event Moved to the Autumn

We were to have put this event, near Caton, Lancaster, on Sunday 27th June. Due to other events on (Chinley Churn, DVO and Sale Fell, WCOC) we have decided to save this excellent event and area until the Autumn when more people can take advantage. We look forward to seeing you there.

Knots Wood results

 

Results and RouteGadget are available for today's event in Knots Wood. Runners were greeted by sunny and dry conditions, and a technical challenge beyond what many expected!

And this note from the planning team: "The dense green stripes represent rhododendron brashings (as shown below) which are a significant obstacle but it is usually possible to pick your way through."

Spring Event in Wellington Wood

The lucky few enjoyed some very nice woodland at Wellington Wood near Lancaster today. Results and RouteGadget are now available.

Yarrow Valley results

Well the sun shone and it was back to "proper" orienteering for those lucky souls who ran at Yarrow Valley today. Andy Quickfall had planned courses that demonstrated that there is still plenty of damp ground around even after weeks without rain! Results and RouteGadget are available.

 A brand new map with a new extension has been made by planner Andy Quickfall. Be sure not to miss this one! Entries have had to be limited to 60 people and full details can be found on the fixtures tab.

Lancaster University Easter Cracker

It's O Jim, and just as we know it! The Spring Return to Orienteering Competition began in glorious Spring sunshine at Lancaster University today. The event had been planned to take place on the first day of the year but that was not to be. However, almost 100 competitors enjoyed a superb blast around the parkland and woodland, with a little in the built up area for variety, and all agreed it had been worth the wait! Lancaster University Easter Cracker Final details & entries

Final details for this rescheduled event are now available here. Entries, limit 100 participants, will be open from 07:00 23rd March until 22:00 31st March, or earlier if the event becomes full. Follow this link to SIEntries enter.

The Easter Cracker is Coming!

We are delighted to announce that the Easter Cracker, a 60 minute score event at Lancaster University (venue for the 2015 JK Sprints) will be held on Saturday 3rd April (Easter Saturday). Start times are likely to be 10.30 to 12.30. We are using the whole campus of the University, with most controls in the landscaped grounds and only a few in the buildings complex. We are most grateful to the University for permission to hold the event.

Entries will be all pre entry, via SI Entries, opening towards the last week of March and closing before the event, with a limit of 100 competitors who must be members of British Orienteering. Fees £5/£2. Full details will be posted at the time of entries opening. Any immediate enquiries to Development@sroc.org 

Orienteering opportunities!

We have a number of ideas to keep you all fit and interested in orienteering during the current lack of competitive events. 

Turfing challenge match against PFO! We have been challenged to a competition using the gps game app called Turf by our neighbouring club PFO. Just in case you haven’t yet heard of or tried Turf here is a brief description. 

An opportunity for local lockdown orienteering with iOrienteering

SROC planner Andy Quickfall is introducing a new (to us) form of virtual orienteering that does not rely on gps or data signals. Please read this note from Andy. Remember to follow current Covid guidelines regarding exercising locally if wishing to have a go.

Street League part 2 further update

In the light of the latest instructions from the Government regarding Covid I feel there is no alternative but to cancel the final 5 events of the 2020-21 season. It is apparent that the first three events cannot go ahead as they will be within the minimum time period for the current restrictions. If the restrictions are eased at the end of the period indicated there will be insufficient time to then plan and organise event 4. With only the possibility of the final event going ahead it seems very unfair to ask the organiser to plan an event that could be attended by relatively few people, judging by the quite small numbers feeling able to go to the last 3 events in Part 1.

My thanks go to the Organisers/Planners who put on the first five events; your efforts are greatly appreciated.

We all hope that we can return to street leaguing in the 2021-22 season.

Street League - part 2

In the light of the Tier 4 restrictions it is intended that the next event, at Plungington, will be deregistered as an SROC event. It will not therefore be an official orienteering event but rather be available during that fortnight to enable personal exercise within a Night Street environment. Unfortunately this means it will not be for the Guild Trophy but at the end of the fortnight results will be published as a way to encourage participation.

Further to this it must be pointed out that anyone taking a map and running is fully responsible for following Government guidelines and is not covered by BOF insurance, it is therefore no different to any training run you may do. Bob Nash
