SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) More helpers needed for the Tim Watkins Blodslitet

The Tim Watkins Trophy (Blodslitet) event at Whitbarrow Scar on March 1st is still short of helpers. Most urgently required are First Aiders to work in 2 groups. Additionally there is a need for a further 4 volunteers for misc jobs not requiring any special skills or experience. These would be ideal for new club members to get more involved with running an event. If you are able to help please contact Peter Knott (assistant organiser) 01772 683072 asap.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) The Blackpool Tower Trophy 2007-2008

The coveted Blackpool Tower Trophy, traditionally fought over at the nearest Street League event of the season, has been awarded this year to Quentin Harding. The rules state that the highest rate of scoring (points per hour) on any course, and corrected for age, wins the trophy; except that no-one may win more than once in their life! So congratulations to Quentin, enjoy it for the next 12 months or so as it will never be yours again! The league scores have been updated after five events, half way through the season.

If ever you can't make it to a Street League you can contact the organiser to obtain a copy of the map, and time yourself on another night. You must return your answer sheet before the next event, and you are not permitted to score more than the winner on the night!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Urgent call to all club members! Compass Sport Cup qualifier January 2008

There is already the nucleus of a team signed up for the Compass Sport Cup match at Frodsham Hill on 13th January. See details on this message board thread. To ensure that we move forward to the final we need more people to contact Sarah Watkins before 21st December. Everyone can join the team, even if you don't expect to be in the top few on your course. You will still help by reducing the scores of runners from other clubs. This year we are reinstating subsidised runs: you pay only 3 pounds for seniors and 1 pound for juniors. So come on and let's see South Ribble in the final where we belong!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League 5 Blackpool North

Results, RouteGadget and Organisers' comments can now be access via the Street League results index. Please add your route, it makes for useful comparison when there are several others to look at. Remember to add your name and time taken (in the format mmss) before saving.

RouteGadget is now ready for you to add your routes for Wednesday's street event. We are trying a slightly different way of setting up the event this time, which considerably reduces the time taken to set up but requires a little more effort from you, the users! All you have to do extra is to type in your name and time taken, when prompted. The drawing of your route works exactly the same. Any problems should be emailed to Chris Roberts

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Top performances from SROC members at VHI and BSOC

The weekend of 17&18 November saw two major competitions held at opposite ends of the UK. The Veteran Home International at Pitlochry was won by England, including SROC stars Julian Lailey 1st M60 and Quentin Harding 2nd M45. Full results are here. Meanwhile in Dorset the British Schools Orienteering Championship was beset by bad weather, and results are still provisional on Sunday evening. There were some strong performances by SROC juniors and Chris Nash won B8 running 5.4 mins/km! Katrin Harding finished 2nd in G10, Zoe Harding was 4th in G8 and John Ockenden was 4th in B9. There was also a World Schools selection race on Saturday, in which Matt Nash finished 5th on M14 and Katrin and Zoe were 2nd and 4th respectively on W14, so perhaps we may look forward to sending some club members to the World Schools next year (in Scotland). BSOC results are here, or view the BSOA website.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Compass Sport Cup 2008

The Compass Sport Cup (inter club competition) is taking place early in 2008! The event will be held at Frodsham Hill, Cheshire, on Sunday 13th January. The key to winning is to get the maximum number of club members out, so the club needs YOU. Based on our 2007 performance, we have a good chance of making it through to the final if we can secure a good turn out.
It is hoped to organise a minibus for the day at a reasonable cost. Please let Sarah Watkins know if you would be interested in using the minibus by Monday 19th November. Also contact Sarah to let her know whether you want to be entered for the event.

The weekend of 27 & 28 October saw the 40th time this event, now the Original Mountain Marathon (formerly the KIMM), has been run. A group of SROC stalwarts ventured north to the Lowther hills and braved some mixed weather conditions on this arduous two-day event. Some fine performances were recorded and we must congratulate Sean Bolland running with his brother Brendan who were 1st on the Elite course, and Quentin Harding, paired with his brother Kevin, who finished 9th overall and 1st Veterans also on the Elite course. Sue Harding and partner Kate Ludley were 1st females on the C course while Karen Nash and Rowena Browne were the highest placed all-SROC pair, coming 32nd overall on the A course and 1st Female Veterans. SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League points for event 1

Individual unadjusted and age adjusted points for the first Street League event have been added to the results index. Points are calculated by comparing raw points per hour scores with the highest scorer on the night, who is given 100 league points. The age adjusted score takes into account the expected relative speeds based on age, and hence allows fairer comparisons between runners of different ages.

Now the nights are getting darker, our gym sessions are starting again - the first being this Wednesday 10th October, as usual at Broughton High School (just off the A6 at Broughton crossroads, north of the A6/M55 junction). Note we are in the gym there, not the sports hall. Sessions start at 7.00pm, and finish about 8.30pm when we go to the pub. They are a mixture of stretching, jogging, circuit training and practice map reading exercises, finishing with a game of basketball (well, it bears a resemblance). All activities are of course optional and can be done at your own pace. This week we hope to kick off with a bleep test (if you don't know what that is come along and find out!). Lancaster University's Sports Pavilion was almost over-run by orienteers at the first O-zone event today. Many beginners turned up, having seen the advertising in local press and shops. Thanks to a good turnout of SROC helpers they all seemed to enjoy their experience, and many ran 2 or 3 courses. The final mass start butterfly loop race was a fitting end to the day for those who still had energy to spare. Results are now posted here.

Quentin Harding was 10th on the mens course that covered 28km and had 2700m of climb. Results are here.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Important note to all 6 days competitors

Everyone should by now have received their programs and bibs, showing start times. You should also have received a letter explaining an error with these times. This affects all bibs, so if you haven't received the letter, look at it on the Scottish 6 Days website.
