SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) New Year Cracker cancelled

The following message has been emailed to all those who entered the NYC 2021:

"Following the announcement today that Lancashire will move into tier 4 from midnight on Wednesday 30th December the SROC committee has decided that the only course of action is to cancel the event scheduled for New Year's Day.

Since we cannot guarantee being able to obtain permission from the University authorities to use the area at another time in the near future we have also decided to offer a full refund to all those who supported us by entering the event."

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Night Street League 2020-21

We are approaching the end of the first half of our current series, undertaken in very difficult circumstances, and we hope to have a full set of results available asap in the new year. The next 5 events are 'oven ready', Covid permitting. Details of these events, in terms of venues, organisers and dates can be found here and on the SROC Fixtures page.

The first event is in Preston and for the Guild Trophy and the final details are available here. It has been suggested that there may be a temptation for competitors to run for longer than they declare and to start before it is dark. I have absolutely no evidence that this has happened. As a quick reminder at the start of the series you were asked to provide a trace of your route if at all possible, but as this is for a trophy it will be necessary for any competitor to be considered as a winner to provide a trace (Strava or equivalent) of their course.

Don't forget you MUST be Covid compliant at the time you do your run. Bob Nash

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Stanley Park, Blackpool Maprun Reopens

We had to take down the Maprun courses due to areas being taped off because Avian Flu precautions! but after Wayne Byrne, the planner and soon to be SROC member modified them we are able to open them again!

The courses will remain open for the foreseeable but from the informal league viewpoint points will score only up to and including Monday 17h January. All classes to run the longer one for the informal league, apart from M/W14- which runs the shorter. Of course, you can run which ever you like if you are not interested in points! Or both!
I am doubtful that we will be able to get the paper maps on the BOF portal until the New Year (office closed) but you can get them by emailing me Development@sroc.org

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League

The Lancaster event is available now (details on the Fixtures page).  Despite being  in Lockdown British Orienteering  guidance shows that we can continue with the Lancaster and Blackburn events in the current  format  (see www.sroc.org news item 29th September for details).  The BO  Guidance is as below;

'Within these new restrictions for England, the government continue to emphasise the importance of outdoor exercise and recreation. Orienteering remains an excellent, socially distanced sport, and many types of orienteering activity can be undertaken within these new restrictions in England. Despite these new measures, orienteering is still very much open for everyone to enjoy.

Orienteering activities that can continue within the new government guidance for England areas follows

  • Unsupported training activities on your own, with people you live with, within your support bubble, or with one person from another household if social distancing is maintained. These include the use of training maps created by individuals or clubs
  • The use of Permanent Orienteering Courses, Virtual Orienteering Courses and activities such as MapRun events. All Virtual Orienteering Courses and activities must be open for a minimum of at least seven days, to reduce the risk of overcrowding
  • One-to-one outdoor orienteering coaching
  • Mapping and Local planning for future events.

The government guidance is that you should look to reduce the number of journeys you make. Outdoor exercise should be done locally wherever possible, but you can and should travel to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space).'

It is proposed that the autumn street runs will now be open until the end of Dec to give you more chance to be spread out/ not meet up and also for individuals to decide when they feel comfortable to travel. With luck all those events will be available soon so you can pick which ones you wish to run and so can opt to stay very local if you wish to. Bob Nash

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) 2020-21 Street League

Yes, we are keen to make the series happen! Many rules remain the same – you must wear high visibility clothing, complete your run in the dark and it is recommended that you carry a torch.

Due to Covid, and to keep us all safe there are some important changes:

· Each event has a date but you have a week from that date to complete your run. We hope this will allow runners to stay distanced. Note, the date shown on the SROC fixture list is the last date for each event, not the first!

· You must travel to and run at each event alone (or with others from your household). This includes pairs.

· You should not arrange to meet up with others pre or post run.

· You should abide by all National and Local rules in place at the time.

These events are free to enter for now but it is likely that we may have to pay a BO levy. This is £1.50 per run. A record will be kept and you will be asked to pay this electronically after the first 5 events.

Events may vary. Some will ask you to email the organiser to obtain a map and answer sheet that you can then print out. You will then scan or photo your answer sheet and return it by email. Ideally you will also provide an electronic trace of your route on Route Gadget or Strava or equivalent. The email request will also serve as the insurance registration that we usually complete for the series. Some events may use MapRun instead. It is very important that you check each event on the SROC events calendar as the situation is constantly changing. Bob Nash

British Orienteering has announced that orienteering will return to England on 1st August 2020 (subject to any further restrictions that may be imposed by the government).

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Dick Collins

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the death from a heart attack of one of our longest serving members, Dick Collins. During his distinguished career Dick held just about every committee post and his contribution to the development of our club cannot be overstated. A truly wonderful man and club servant, his loss will be greatly felt, not only by ourselves but by the wider orienteering community.

Although his funeral can’t be open to members, the family plan to hold a ‘Celebration’ of his life in the near future.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jane, Matthew and Peter at this particularly difficult time.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) All orienteering activities and events are cancelled until further notice

It is with great sadness that we are now in a position where all orienteering activities in the UK have to be suspended with immediate effect.
We are aware that the Coranvirus outbreak is a very fluid and rapidly changing situation. We all, therefore, continue to follow advice from the Public Health England, the World Health Organisation and both local and national governments on this matter and will keep the orienteering community updated as appropriate.
We know how great the sport is at supporting each other and we ask that you continue to pull together (albeit virtually) during this difficult time. We will do our best to get you back in the forests as soon as it is safe to do so.
Finally, we ask that you continue to follow the government's guidance on how to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Please stay safe and support each other during this hard time.
Best wishes
Peter Hart

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC win at the CompassSport Trophy heat

Sunday's CompassSport Cup and Trophy event hosted by LOC at Breasty Haw saw SROC beat BL and SOLWAY in the Trophy to gain a place in the final, scheduled for 18th October. Team results are on the LOC websiteCongratulations to the 13 SROC scorers who were as follows: 100 points: Marni Lusardi, Alex Matthew, Danny Lusardi, Rebecca Rooke, David Roome, Deb Murrell, John Taylor and Mike Johnson. 99 points: Heather Roome, Joe Murphy.  98 points: Ben Todhunter, Michael Finch and Andy Quickfall.  However the CST is a team event and these scorers were given excellent support by other SROC runners who pushed down rivals, and by all who took part.  The juniors in particular made a terrific contribution, with Cate Matthew and Ellie Todhunter also finishing ahead of all the runners from other clubs on their course.  Well done to everybody!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Blakeholme and Coronavirus

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak entries for the national event at Blakeholme on the 25th April have been suspended temporarily, pending discussions with British Orienteering in the coming days. Please watch this website for further details.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) 2019/20 Street League Season

The overall age-adjusted winners
The season came to to very windy and damp end with the prize-giving after the Ashton event last night. The pub provided us with a great venue and helpful service and as usual the atmosphere was very vibrant and a good time was had by all those who came. A list of the season's prize winners can be found here. This event, as it is outside the series, has it's own special handicap system and the winners were Andrea Gregory and Belinda Bartle, congratulations to them. The full details of last nights Gross Scores and Handicap Scores can be found here. It was also very pleasing that were were able to have sufficient planners/organisers and venues to ensure the next season is complete, details of which can be found here - many thanks to all those who volunteered.
