Bamber Bridge saw the last Street League event for 2012. (Results). Hopefully all who were able to come had an enjoyable time. At least the weather behaved itself. Next year sees the start of the 'event discards' so things can change quite quickly in the tables. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you at the events in 2013, starting of course with Ramsbottom. Best wishes. Bob Nash

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Beacon Fell score event

Thanks to all those who came to Beacon Fell on Saturday. We had a pleasing number of newcomers to the event – we hope especially that you enjoyed it and that most got back before the weather turned from bright, crisp sunshine to decidedly wet! The next day time SROC event is on Tuesday 1st January at Lancaster University – all welcome! See the fixtures tab for details of all SROC events.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Warton & Freckleton results

Another event where the weather was kind to us, although the patches of ice did demand respect. Many thanks to Ray and his 'team' for putting on the event.  A pleasing turnout given the proximity to Xmas and a good time was had by all. It was especially pleasing that Maurice Dean, Peter & Cherith Knott and Ian Evans were able to join in the socialising.
The results for the event are on the web and subject to any queries Pete Kidd is the winner of the 2012 Tower Trophy although it was a close run thing with Alex McCann (please excuse the pun).
Hopefully see you all at Bamber Bridge. Bob Nash

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Demise of the SROC message board

The old SROC phpbb message board has fallen into disuse over the last year or so but was still available until today. It has been taken off line after multiple spam attacks and several hundred bogus users managing to break through security. As an alternative the link at the top of the home page has now been changed to take users direct to the SROC Facebook group, which has hosted a number of lively discussions of late.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) North West Night League

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC success at the British schools orienteering last weekend

Teams from the Lancaster grammar schools traveled together to Delamere forest on Sunday. A few had competed the previous day for the world schools selection race. At that event Laurence Johnson   finished in 4th place. Well done.
On the Sunday the girls went for quality over quantity. They only had full teams in 2 year groups and came first in year 11 and third in year 9. Individually Zoe won by 12 minutes in year 13 and Helen was 3rd in year 11.
The boys came first in year 9 and 4th in years 7 and 8.
Laurence Johnson had a tremendous run coming 2nd in the year 10 boys but no others from his school were running

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Spook O success

This years Spook O hailed a number of firsts: first event on a new map and new area, first time mid week, first use of SI for this event. Despite the damp conditions a good number of family groups and a few seasoned orienteers showed up ready for the mass start at Silverhelme Scout Camp. The mainly wooded area was tricky with all the paths obscured by fallen leaves, but the trickiest part was avoiding the roving vampire (Mark Edwards) who could put a hex on you, only to be lifted by a visit to the wise wizard (Quentin Harding)! A complicated rocks and crags control choice added to the fun, and mapper and planner Julian Lailey was congratulated for his efforts. The winner managed to get all controls within the allotted time and scooped the top prize. Other prizes were awarded for first family and best costume. Results are here.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) WWOP Williamson Park

SROC laid on a special sprint event in Williamson Park on Tuesday 30th October, following a request from a group of Scandinavians who are taking part in an O tour. SROC members were also invited, but unfortunately the main contingent of visitors were delayed and only an advance party were able to compete. Results may be viewed here.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) A little inspiration

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Original Mountain Marathon

The OMM regularly attracts a strong contingent of orienteers, including a number from SROC. This year's event in the Howgills experienced some wet weather on day two but nothing to stop father and daughter pairing of Quentin and Zoe Harding winning the D class by an impressive margin. Rowena Browne and Karen Nash repeated their success of the last few years with first female veterans on class B, also 2nd vets and 14th overall on that course. For full results see http://www.theomm.com/

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Gerry Charnley Way

Long term members may remember the Gerry Charnley Way, created as a memorial to Gerry, a founder member of SROC, in the 1980's. Recently there has been interest shown in bringing the GCW to the fore once more, although the Harvey's map has been long out of print. SROC mountain marathon exponents Karen Nash and Tony Marlow completed the 38 mile round in 13 1/2 hours on Saturday 22nd September and are pictured at the Gerry Charnley memorial cairn.

The Council have promoted the series and have between 6 and 10 novices coming to the first event at Yarrow Valley. In order to show the newcomers the variety of orienteering events available and to make it more interesting for Club members we are endeavouring to put on a range of different activities at each event.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) What to do after The Olympics?

After a fantastic fortnight of success for Team GB it might be time to move from spectatorship to participation! SROC has a feast of orienteering opportunities planned for the autumn, starting with two series of events spread between the north and south of our area. Then there is a level C "colour coded" event on Simpson Ground, and the final NW urban series race of 2012 in Chorley. Along with the Night Street League, Spook O and a NW Night League event on Traitor's Gill there should be something for everyone, from outright beginner to seasoned orienteer. Look out for details of events nearer the time or check out the Fixtures page for preliminary information.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Swedish Oringen

Here are some photos from last weeks Oringen, at which the Smith Ockendens, Katrin and Sue and I were present. Photos include some of the action from the elite sprint round Halmstad, including the great Thierry Georgiou. The weather was fantastic, wall to wall sunshine. In our view the best of the nine Oringens we have been to, with wonderful forests and even a sand dune day which were very reminiscent of the wooded part of Formby. Martyn Roome

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Eggerslack RouteGadget

RouteGadget for the Club Picnic is now ready to have your routes added.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Club Picnic at Eggerslack

Fine sunny weather blessed an excellent club picnic today, with the event itself in Eggerslack Wood near Grange Over Sands, and the picnic proper at nearby Humphrey Head outdoors centre. The picture shows the view from Humphrey Head. Tom Barkas planned and organised the event and his score course provided plenty of entertainment with no runner quite managing all the controls within the allotted hour. Gavin Smith came closest, visiting all in a little over 61 minutes. Full results are available here.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Club Picnic only days away

Next Saturday, 14th July, sees the 2012 club picnic. Lovely wood (Eggerslack) and picturesque picnic site (outdoors or indoors, depending on weather) next to Cumbria Wildlife Trust site at Humphrey Head. Registration 1.00-1.40 pm at Grange-over-Sands, start 2 pm, picnic 4-5.30 pm. Leg cover advisable and check for ticks. One hour score but there is also an easier option for newcomers. Picnic is a Jacob's Join, so get the quiches in the oven. Coffee and tea and cutlery and crockery will be provided. Tom Barkas would like to know if you are bringing newcomers/relative beginners and how many. Also any volunteer control collectors would be welcome.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Lancaster University summer sprint event

This evening's fifth and last event in the summer sprint series was held at the Lancaster University campus, earmarked for the JK 2015 sprint venue. David Roome planned but was unable to be there for the event so Rowena Browne ably organised while Julian Lailey put out all the controls. One of the difficult things about using this campus for orienteering is that they will keep changing it by building or demolishing things! Some new building works meant that the recently updated map was incorrect in some places which made a difference to the relative speed of various route choices. Therefore the splits either side of controls 6 and 9 on the Prologue were omitted from the results. The Final was very little affected by new works so all the times stand. Gavin Smith nobly self-disqualified after using an apparently valid cut-through which was not shown on the map. Sometimes having local knowledge is not an advantage! Results are on the series webpage. RouteGadget and final series tables will follow later.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Quentin wins Long Distance Gold at WMOC

Another fantastic performance from Quentin Harding in the M50 Long final today secured him a second world title at the World Masters O Champs. The Long is regarded by many as the purest form of orienteering, and is often called "classic" distance. Quentin has proved that the best orienteers can be good at all disciplines after his earlier Sprint win.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) The very first street event

Deep in the archives there are details of the first street event, held in Preston in 1967 as an antidote to Foot & Mouth Disease which was preventing access to terrain at that time. These details have been gathered into this pdf file. (Warning: this is a large file and may take some time to open on slow connections).

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Clitheroe Castle sprint

Mike Ormerod planned a superb challenge on his Clitheroe Castle (& town) map for the fourth event in the summer sprint series yesterday. Yet again there were a few mispunches on the Prologue, which stayed in the castle grounds. The Final utilised the town centre, with multiple route choices on many legs after two butterflies round the castle. Mike laid on a junior final for those too young to run on streets. Results are on the series web page. Look out for revised league tables and RouteGadget later.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Quentin is World Champion!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Preston Guild final results

To my relief the weather stayed dry, if very humid, for the Cottam Mass Start event - the culmination of the Summer Series. The results for the event are now on the web - showing different results for different adjusting factors - interesting but far from conclusive. Pleasingly the feed back from the series was encouraging and seeing as we were very generously given a Series Trophy by the Preston Guild Committee it looks like there will need to be another series next year - hopefully extending it to areas outside of Preston. Any volunteers gratefully welcomed. In the meantime planning for the next Winter Series is well on with 11 organisers and the areas identified. Bob Nash.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC cycle ride

Sixteen SROC members took part in the annual cycle ride, starting in light mizzle and ending in glorious sunshine! The route stared just north of Lancaster and took in Glasson Dock, Galgate, the canal round Lancaster, Slyne and back to Denny Beck. The café near Glasson was very welcome, and we are indebted to the Ockendens for a lovely lunch stop at their house! In all, around 30 miles was covered.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Preston Guild winners

A list of all the prizewinners in the recently completed Preston Guild Street Orienteering Series may be viewed here. Series competitor Tony Marlow had this to say about the events: "They were all very well organised on good maps with good weather, new people and new members. They were in fact good social occasions too - maybe a model of things to come!!? The amount of work Bob has put in is phenomenal."

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Fulwood, Longsands and Cow Hill street O

Longsands was the last of the 'normal' Summer Street League series and pleasingly it was dry despite getting quite dark at times. Again there was an increasing turnout with two more new to the series and some others coming back. The mixture of urban and rural was well received despite the significant increase in the undergrowth in the last week and the presence of bovine spectators in some fields. The final event at Cottam is the mass start 1 hour score to be followed by the prizegiving - the final tables will go on the web at the weekend unless people want to be kept in the dark until Wednesday - let me know. See you at Cottam. Bob Nash. Results link and RouteGadget link.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Summer Sprint event 3

Martyn Roome set two excellent courses, utilising all the best bits of the University of Cumbria campus, for this evening's round three of the sprint series. There were a few mispunches resulting from not reading the descriptions and codes closely enough! Results from the event are available from this page. Updated league tables and RouteGadget for the event will follow in the next day or two.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC Summer Cycle Ride

You are warmly invited to the 2012 SROC cycle ride on Sunday 24th June. It will start at a convenient point close to Lancaster at 10.00am (unless the weather is not good enough – check back here the night before). The pace will be leisurely and distance 25-30 miles on road and cycle track, with the option of a short cut. It will be a different route to last year, but no less enjoyable! Of course there will be a morning stop at a cafe but bring lunch for after that. More details of the meeting point will be provided by Martyn Roome. Just contact him if coming, by  email

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Preston Guild Street O event 3

Despite the threat of rain we managed a dry event - a pleasing turn out with more new faces and interest from spectators. As you can read in my comments it was very nice that Maurice Dean was able to attend, and take part, courtesy of Peter Knott - many thanks for your efforts Peter. This was particularly pleasing as Maurice is the founding father of SROC Street Orienteering with the first event being held in 1967 at the very same venue we used last night. Don't forget that next weeks event is the last of the normal series with a definite rural emphasis (the final event is a mass start 1 hour event before the prize giving). Bob Nash. Results are on line here and RouteGadget is ready to receive your routes.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Preston Guild event 2

The second of the Preston Guild Street League took place last night in less than ideal conditions - the early runners got quite a soaking - but came back declaring wet but warm which I suppose was some consolation (how did the Lancastrians know that it was going to be wet in Preston?) The pleasing aspect was that rather than putting people off we actually had an increase in numbers with more newcomers arriving as a result of being 'Facebooked' by friends who had enjoyed the previous week. The post event chats indicated that everyone enjoyed themselves despite the soggy conditions and was looking forward to the next event in a fortnights time at The Continental - see you there. Bob Nash.  For results follow this link.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Summer Sprint Series - event 2 results

The second event in the sprint series saw a massive turnout in Williamson Park today. Ideal conditions prevailed, sunny but not too warm and very dry underfoot. The intricate path system and many steep slopes caught some people out as always in this challenging area. The new ISSOM map seemed well received, and Jeff Ball's courses were a credit to him as a new planner. Results are now on-line and accessible via the Summer Sprint Series page; click on the icon on the left. Quentin declared himself non-competitive because of his close involvement in the late stages of course planning, and Mike Johnson gallantly disqualified himself in the Final because he transgressed by crossing an uncrossable wall.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Preston Guild street O event 2

The next event in the Preston Series is tomorrow, Wednesday, in Fulwood. The venue is the Sherwood - see the map accessible from the fixtures page. Please note that this is not the location advertised in the paper North West fixtures list.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Summer Sprint Format

Following a request for more information on the sprint series for newcomers over on the SROC Facebook group, here are a few notes which may help explain what we are up to:
The basic format is borrowed more or less from the major Sprint Orienteering events such as the British Champs. In essence there are two separate races, each quite short (though not as short as a sprint on the track!). The first is a qualifier or prologue, and in the British Champs the results from this determine which of several finals you qualify for. Because our events have much smaller numbers of competitors we have just one final. The qualifier is used to determine the start order in the final, with fastest starting last. We use shorter time intervals (15-30 seconds at the discretion of the organiser) in the final and the course has two or more variants. This means that you can't just rely on following the man or woman in front of you since they will probably be taking the controls in a different order. Unlike score events you must follow the order of controls as marked on your map. Everyone ends up doing the same course but parts will have been taken in a different sequence. Overall results (for our events) are simply the total time taken, adding both races together. Straight line distances are typically around 2-3 km and probable winning times are 10 mins and 15 mins for the two races. However some folk will take a lot longer. Everyone is welcome and help is always at hand.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Summer Sprint Series event two

The next exciting instalment in the Summer Sprint Series is to be held on Tuesday 29th May in Williamson Park. Details of where to park etc. have been added to the fixtures page. Please note that we will be based around the butterfly house area, not in the usual spot at the bottom car park. League tables will be published after event 2. With a total of five events in the series, results will be based on a runner's best three scores. There will be prizes for several categories, the same as last year. These will be Men's and Women's Open, Junior Men and Women (M/W14-) and Veteran Men and Women (M/W 55+).

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC Summer Sprint series starts soon

The 2012 summer sprint series starts on Monday 14th May at Salt Ayre, Lancaster. The other four events in the series will be held on Tuesday evenings over the next few weeks. Each event consists of two races: a prologue, with start times of 18.30-19.00, swiftly followed by a reverse order final with short start intervals and gaffling/butterflies. The intention is to recreate a full sprint format event in miniature, with the chance to socialise during and after. All five events will be on ISSOM standard maps. fees are £3/£1 and once again we are offering a discount if the whole series is entered in advance. More details on the Sprint Series webpage and the fixture list.
Beginners Very Welcome. The event is very suitable for complete beginners as you can walk/take it at your own pace and as with almost all orienteering there is no mass start, so you will not feel pressured by others. Full help and guidance will be given prior to the first start time of 6.30pm. Beginners can contact Martyn Roome on Martyn@mroome,myzen.co.uk if they want more information.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) New POC launch

There will be a special event to launch the new Permanent Orienteering Course created at Sizergh Castle on Tuesday evening, 8th May. Starts are from 18.15 and the event will use SI electronic punching. This event replaces the regular Tuesday club training session, but fear not, there will be a session organised at Sizergh after you have had a chance to run! This will include the increasingly popular Ultimate Frisbee match. All welcome!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League a runaway success!

The 2011-12 season has come to a close, tables completed and Prizes awarded. It was one of the keenest contested I can remember. In the Age Adjusted category only 21 points separated the top 5 competitors. In the Under 21's only 3 points between the winner and runner-up. To top it all we had 3 competitors who achieved the complete score of 500 points. In conclusion I would like to thank all the organisers and their helpers who put in the time to run the events and to all the competitors who turned up to take part (we had 110 'units' competing over the season). Any way it is only just over 6 months to the next Season and in the meantime there is the Summer Series to whet your appetites. Bob Nash

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Robert Hovey

We have recently learned of the death of Robert Hovey in his mid/late 80's. Robert was a prominant member of SROC in the 1970's and 80's. Whereas his main interest was Ski O, he found time to foot O and do his share of event organising. Robert, in his role as Ski O National Secretary, worked hard to promote this branch of our sport and always had an interest in cross country skiing. The funeral service is at St Thomas Church Kendal at 3pm on Wed 14th of March. Peter Knott

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League tables published

With only one more event to go, at Lancaster, Quentin can still be equalled in the Gross category. Karen looks to have tied up 1st lady in Gross and 1st in the Age Adjusted but a number of the minor places are still up for grabs as is the Pairs in both categories. Please check your scores, especially the discards and don't forget your scores may well affect your handicap for the Leyland event. As a point of interest Lytham saw the 100th competitor for this series.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street League prize presentation VIP guest

Founder member Ann Clarke is to be our guest of honour at the street O prize presentation on Wednesday 14th March at Leyland. Ann and late husband Lol Clarke were amongst the twenty founder members of SROC when the club was formed on 4th December 1964. Ann supported Lol in the club and event organisation for many years in those early days. Although not a particularly keen competitor herself, she was always around doing essential jobs and helping to get things done. Dick Collins will do an introduction prior to the presentation. Founder member Maurice Dean will be present and we are hoping that Roy Woodcock, club historian and author of 'The History of South Ribble Orienteering Club-The First Thirty Years' will also be able to join us.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Latest Street League tables after event 8

After the latest round at Eccleston things are hotting up at the top of both tables. Quentin already has the 'perfect score' of 500 in the Gross but Steve can catch him by winning at both Lytham and Lancaster - now there's a challenge! In the Age Adjusted Karen will be going for the 'perfect score' at both Lytham and Lancaster but can still be caught by Quentin. Matters are close with the pairs in both categories as are the minor placings, so much will be decided at the last two events and don't forget these results could affect your handicap at Event 11.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Eccleston street league 8th February

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Duxbury Score event Saturday 4th February

Many thanks to all those who braved the less than clement weather to take part at Duxbury and especially those who gave up their time to help me. Whilst there were not large numbers all who took part expressed their enjoyment with the courses on offer and the increased 'runnability' of the area, much more fun than it used to be. A special note for Mark Edwards who 'inadvertently "fell" into the river and then found himself on the other bank!' and to Paddy Walsh who decided that the uncrossable marsh could be crossed only to discover that the mapper was right after all. Bob Nash
Results are available here, and RouteGadget for the event is here.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) New way to access fixtures information

Regular readers of Nopesport, the on-line orienteering forum, may have seen this post earlier today. Following those instructions we have created a link for all SROC events and activities, all international and level A events, all level B from NWOA and YHOA, all level C from NWOA and level D's from our neighbouring clubs, in the next 30 days. This will update automatically as the BOF fixtures database changes over time. Please only click on this link if you are interested in evaluating this facility. Any general feedback would be best directed to Nopesport, but specific feedback on usefulness as an addition to (or replacement for?) our fixtures page to webteam@sroc.org please.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Compass Sport Cup update from Club Captain

Team members must enter themselves via oentries on the course you have been asked to run. The club will refund 50% of the entry fee. There are a couple of options regarding the refund. The refund can be collected from the Club Captain on the day. Alternatively if you are planning to enter either the JK or British relay your refund will cover most of the entry fee. Please let the Club Captain know so he can have refunds available.
The team has been selected to try and achieve the highest possible score. As a result you may be asked to run a shorter course than you are used to, but points are important and your position will push other teams down.

Anyone intending running at the next street league event on 8th February should refer to the details issued by event mapper and planner Andy Quickfall. This looks set to be a new variant for the league, which always thrives on innovation and allows different planners to use their own style, and should not be missed!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Relay entries for JK and British

From our Club Captain Mark Edwards:

I need to know who is entering the JK relays this year. This year we are asking people to pay upfront for their entry, we would like to enter teams before prices increase. Club entry fee of £6 (normal price £12) to be sent to Mark Edwards - club captain by the middle of February. Any entries after this will rise to £7.50.

This years British Champs are on home turf (Helsington Barrows near Kendal) so we would like to enter as many relay teams as possible; again we would like to know if you are intending to enter asap. The club will subsidize your entry, meaning the entry cost will be £7.50 up to 19th March.

Juniors entering either event will pay just £3.50.

League tables for gross scores and for age adjusted scores have now been published. SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Club Handicap at Sizergh Castle

South Ribble OC knows how to put on an entertaining day out! Over fifty club members and a few guests enjoyed the challenge set by Julian Lailey on his new Sizergh map, near Kendal, today. Slow going on the wet ground prevented anyone collecting all 30 controls within the allotted hour so the promised bonus point system was not needed. Most adjourned to the rather splendid Athenaeum Hall in Heversham for a social gathering and presentation of the annual trophies. Winner of the Handicap race for the second time (she won in 2006) was Rebecca Roberts, returning to her old form? Results for the race are here and RouteGadget is available here. Please add your routes and re-live the mass start race on your screen. Our photo shows the the race under way moments after the mass start. More photos of the race and prizegiving in the Gallery.
