SROC is hosting the Northern Nights at Nicky Nook on Saturday 17th February 2018. As well as determining the Northern Night champions this event will also be a counter in the North West Night League. Night Street League
Results for Wednesday's epic street league event at Thornton are on line here. If you were not one of the 39 hardy souls taking part then these comments from organisers Bill and Dawn may help to explain why we use the expression "epic":
'Thank you all for disregarding the horrendous weather and travelling to Thornton for the event. The reward for your determination was having beaten the elements to experience one of the most remarkable street-Os ever run! Some of you reported on running knee and even thigh deep through the floods and our favourite among the many comments made was "I would never have thought one of my most memorable orienteering events would be a street-O".'

Lancaster and District Schools Orienteering League 2017
Following the Eaves Wood event on Saturday 11th November the final league scores are available here. There was fierce competition from a record number of schools, but eventually we have the two winners. Christchurch C of E Primary School, Lancaster are the winners of the Primary League, with St Wilfrids C of E, Halton in second and Moorside Primary, Lancaster in a very creditable third.
In the Secondary League Lancaster Royal Grammar School were first (following their success earlier in the year in the Orienteering Challenge Trophy) with Lancaster Girls' Grammar second and Ripley St Thomas third.
Very many congratulations, not only to the winners but to all schools and everyone who took part.
For those who took part and want more orienteering see the fixtures tab of this website (note that the fun New Year Cracker on 1st January is also in Eaves Wood!) and the British Orienteering event diary.

OMM success for SROC pairs!
The Original Mountain Marathon was held over the weekend, based in Langdale. Strong winds and low visibility dominated Saturday's race but did not deter Zoe and Quentin Harding who finished first on the A course. Second were Iain Embrey and John Ockenden and these positions were held after Better conditions on Sunday. Congratulations to these four and to the other SROC members who completed their courses when many others retired. Results here. Photo thanks to the OMM website.
Street League season starts well
The first event in the SROC Night Street League was held on a new map of the Plungington area of Preston last Wednesday and was well attended with a few new faces along with the old hands. Results are on line here. The next event is in Lancaster, followed by Thornton-Cleveleys a fortnight later. Details on the fixtures list.

Williamson Park Results
The results from the event on 7th October are here. It was great to see so
many of you there today, especially as many had also been to the event before at
Happy Mount Park. And you all seemed to be having a great time, despite the fact
that it was a bit damp at times and certainly wet off of the paths. My thanks to
all the helpers who worked hard to make the event go so well.
Alongside the results, on the results tab, you will see colour standard times. If you finish inside the colour standard time at 3 events you can claim a
cloth badge, different ones for each colour course. This is a great way to work
your way through the courses, and improve your orienteering abilities. The
badges cost £1.50 each and you can get them from me Development@sroc.org, just by stating the
3 events. There are now colour times up for Happy Mount Park too, so you may
only need one more!
Schools league scores will be updated and published on the website over the
next couple of days. Looking at the results, you can see that competition for
both the Primary and Secondary prizes is hotting up!
The final event to count is at Eaves Wood, Silverdale on Saturday 11th
November – put it in your diary now and make sure, if you are part of a school,
that you get a good turnout!

Schools League scores
Here are the scores for the Lancaster and District Schools League after the
first of the three events in the series. In the Primary section Christchurch
have taken a narrow lead over over the winners of the April Schools Challenge
winners, Bolton-le-Sands, but there are many points for all schools to claim
over the next two events.
In the Secondary section, Lancaster Girls Grammar are out on their own –
but there could be other senior schools at the next events!
There were a number of school age entrants who had no school declared There
is still time to update these before or at the next event, so it's possible that
the Happy Mount Park scores will be revised.
Well done to all concerned! Make sure you all bring reinforcements from
your schools to the next event at Williamson Park on 7th October, where the
competition will be sure to hot up!
Updates of schools of entrants to me please, Development@sroc.org

Happy Mount Park Results
Well done to all of you who came and by the looks of it enjoyed yourselves!
Many of you did more than one course, including Micah who did all 5 courses!
For those of you competing in the schools league, points will be put up
over the next day or so. A number of juniors did not declare a school on their
registration slip, and if this was an error please email me on
Development@sroc.org with your name and school and I will update the results and
allocate you points in the league. If parents ran by themselves on a course you
can also score, so let me know which school. To view the results click here.
With so many people doing more than one course, I fear that we may have
lost the results for just a few people on their 2nd or subsequent runs – the
software or we got confused. I am really sorry about this, but it wont affect
the schools scoring. We have defined a better system for the next event at
Williamson Park, Lancaster, which is on Saturday 7th October –
see you there! And bring more friends and family – we can cope! Martyn Roome

Night Street Orienteering new season starts soon!
The street orienteering league, comprising ten events at fortnightly intervals plus a series finale event, returns for the 2017-2018 season starting on Wednesday 25th October. These events are great for winter training and are very sociable occasions with most being held from a pub or similar, The first event is based at the Brook Tavern in Plunginton (Preston) with a newly mapped area. This pub doesn't normally do food in the evenings but we have been offered a choice of lasagne or veggie lasagne at around £2,50 a head. Pre-orders for food please direct to Karen Nash.

Summer Sprint Series final table and league winners
Thanks to those who travelled west to Blackpool to take part
in the fifth and final event of the Summer Sprint series. The wet weather of the
earlier part of the day cleared leaving us with a warm, humid but dry evening.
The low number of entrants meant that high points scores were available to the
competitors and many league places changed, most notably M(Open) and MV55+
league leaders.
League Series winners : M(Open) Finlay Johnson, W(Open) Jane
Anthony, VM55+ Paul Turner, VW55+ Miriam Rosen, JW14- Cate Matthew, JM14- not

Support the GB Team!
The external funding for the GB Orienteering
Team has largely disappeared this year, so the GB Team going to the World Orienteering Championships in Estonia at
the end of the month needs help from the orienteering membership.
The team has set up a 'My Donate' page. Money donated goes to the
Orienteering Foundation, which is a well-established charity. It has agreed to
pass on the money raised through this page to help meet the expenses of the team
and hence reduce the amount the team members have to pay themselves. Money
donated can attract gift aid, can be anonymous, can carry an encouraging
message, and in addition it will be accounted for in end of year accounts so
donors can get good feedback

Latest sprint series results
Today's sprint event, the third in the series (out of five), was held in rather blustery conditions but with little of the promised rain to contend with. The Scale Hall and Salt Ayre map was extended to the neighbouring Grosvenor Park estate for this event which gave a little extra variety for series regulars. Results including RouteGadget may be accessed via the Results page. Congratulations to Finlay Johnson for his overall win.

Sprint Series event 3
The next Summer Sprint Series event will take place on Tuesday 6th June at Salt Ayre, Lancaster. The existing Salt Ayre and Scale Hall map has been extended to include more urban sprint terrain which has not previously been used for orienteering. With a flat, fast course this could be a good chance to improve your points in the league! Like some of the other venues this race includes public roads with some fast moving traffic so is limited to 16 year olds and above (unless accompanied). The Prologue however is open to all ages.

Street League plaudits
This has been another excellent year of Street-Orienteering with enjoyable
and competitive events and lots of good socials afterwards thanks to the
efficient and imaginative organization by Bob Nash. The Awards evening
proved especially pleasant and the handmade plaques to all the winners showed
that a lot of thought and effort had gone in to the presentation.
Many thanks from all league competitors to Bob and Karen for providing such a memorable way to spend winter evenings - it's what lightens the dark dreary winter months and what many of us will be looking forward to next October.

Club Handicap
A slightly smaller turnout than usual enjoyed the annual Club Handicap and Social/Prizegiving at Dalton Crags and Burton village hall today. Unfortunately this clashed with a major event weekend elsewhere and other regular participants were out of the country. Nevertheless the event was enjoyable and a true handicap victor was found. First in was Lucie Todhunter but she had punched too quickly at one control which hadn't registered in her SI card. Next in was Laurence Johnson, only a few seconds ahead of his younger brother Finlay. Laurence therefore was declared the Handicap winner. At the prizegiving the National & Provincial shield went to Tony Marlow in recognition of his organisational skills. The Men's trophy was won by Quentin Harding and the Women's by Heather Roome. Most Improved was Philip Gager and Best Newcomers went to the Lusardi family. Age class prize winners will appear in a later newsletter. Results, handicap results and RouteGadget are all available.

Cracker apology
First of all thank you to those who have sent me a message offering to disqualify themselves after my comments about taking a short cut over or through the uncrossable wall marked on the map. I think I have replied to everyone individually, but for anyone else interested I have decided to leave the results unchanged for the following reasons:

New Year off to a cracking start!
The 16th New Year Cracker, held in Eggerslack Woods, was blessed with sunny weather and a good turnout of local orienteers and others from further afield. The fiendish format was a true test for befuddled heads as befits the first event of the year. Only Helen Ockenden managed to score maximum points, to secure the Women's Open title. Other class winners were Matthew Rooke (Men's Open), Christopher Calow and Judy Burge (M & W60+), Alasdair Pedley and Evie Conway (M & W18-) and William Dykes and Ellie Simmonds (M & W14-). The Novice prize was awarded to Robbie Lightfoot. Results may be viewed here. RouteGadget is here.
