SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Street O Runs on a different night

It has been brought to my attention that not everyone is aware that the rules of our street league series do allow for people to run an individual event on a different night to the scheduled one. The rule is that you need to notify the organiser in advance to let them know when you wish to run the event, and that this must be sometime before the next event. Also when you do run, you are not allowed to score higher than the winner on the night.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) SROC Night Street Series

Wednesday night saw the start of the 2023/24 winter series in rather blustery conditions. Fortunately whilst it was very windy on the open areas near to the beach I am assured that in the streets it was calmer. The results for the event can be found here, and RouteGadget here. if you have any queries about your score then please get in touch with me. This event is also for the Tower Trophy, it can only be won once and competitors' points are adjusted in terms of age and gender by using the special multiplier. As a result of that the provisional winner of this series' Tower Trophy is Vladislav Zavjalov, so many congratulations to him.

A big thank you to all those whose took part and a reminder that the next event on 1st November in Ashton is for the Guild Trophy -  details are on the website.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Autumn Series 1, Beacon Fell

Around 50 orienteers enjoyed a warm and sunny day of orienteering at the Beacon Fell event with orange, green and score courses available.  The course took in a mix of heathland and forest, with some fine views from the park summits across the Bowland Hills to the North East, and over to Blackpool and the Fylde coast in the west.

Conditions were mostly dry underfoot (except for the marshes!), however, the late summer undergrowth made for slower going away from the paths.  Most participants completed clean runs, however, a small number of controls were missed due to a couple of mapping/placement ambiguities - apologies to those who lost time here.

Great to see some new orienteers trying the sport for the very first time, as well as more experienced orienteers and also some enthusiastic juniors who completed a more technical course for the first time - very well done!  We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and that we might see you again at future events.

Thank you for coming and to all the helpers on the day. Michael Hendry

There was a fabulous turnout and equally fabulous weather was enjoyed at the event in Grisedale Wood, part of the Leighton Hall estate, today. SROC members Lucie Todhunter and David Roome have been selected to run for England in the W40 and M40 classes. This comes on the back of outstanding performance in 2022.

The Interland Cup is England’s only international competition outside the British Isles. England competes annually in this five-cornered match against two Belgian teams (Flemish and French speaking), the Netherlands, and the French Ligue des Hauts de France de Course d’Orientation (LHFCO) . The competition is truly a team effort spanning age groups from W and M14 to W and M60+

Belgium host the 2023 Interland Cup which will take place at Lommel ‘Kattenbos’in north east Belgium on 5 March.

This venue is typical mixed open and wooded on sandy soil with fine contour (2.5m vi) detail: one of the best in this part of Belgium.

We wish them the very best for the competition!

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) Tottington Street O tonight

Street-O tonight is ON

Paul and I have been for a run around the area this lunchtime and decided we are OK to go ahead.

Most pavements and footpaths have a thin covering of powder snow which offers good traction. There are some small patches of ice on some of the more minor roads but these are avoidable.  All of the main roads are fine.

Obviously everyone will need to exercise a little more caution than usual but we are good to go ahead. Though not essential, we'd recommend wearing trail shoes to give a bit more grip. Please pass on this advice to anyone who might not see this post.

See you tonight. Matt Driver

Please bring a contribution to the Jacob's join meal.  Entry is free but do please register on Eventbrite to make sure we have a map for you. More details via the Fixtures page.

SROCkite.gif (2521 bytes) What a Cracker!

The New Year Cracker returned to more normal terrain today as over 140 orienteers gathered for the mass start in Low Park Wood, near Kendal. There were many compliments paid to Simonas Sakalauskas's courses, a choice of a classic score or the more fiendish Fours, Fives and Sixes. Nobody managed to collect all the controls on either course within the 45 minute time limit, despite some valliant attempts. Congratulations to Matt Rooke and Cate Matthew, first male and female on the complex course, while Max Wilkinson and Rachel Platt were the first placed on the classic. Full results are on-line here, and RouteGadget is available here.
